Constipation, Bloating & Gas Can Be Debilitating. Real Remedies Revealed.
This week on the Harmony with Food Radio Show I talked about gut health, weight loss resistance, the microbiome, and shared a little bit more about my background.
Not losing weight? Your Microbiome May Be to Blame
My clients often come to me feeling like they've tried everything to lose weight, from restrictive diets to exercise, but the extra pounds still aren't budging. Studies have shown that when you have a higher number of bad gut bacteria than good bacteria, you are more likely to be overweight.
How I Work On Gut Health
Whether you're weight loss resistant, experiencing digestive issues, or any number of other things, this is how I like to work on improving the gut:
Gut Microbiome Testing - for me, this is the gold standard that tells me where we need to go next. This test measures over 170 species of microbes, 67 pathogenic microorganisms, and markers of inflammation.
Get Rid of the Bad Bacteria - if the microbiome shows that your bad bacteria outweigh your good bacteria, we will start a regimen to help bring down the bad bacteria. When you work with me, I'll give you access to my online apothecary where you can purchase your supplements.
Increase the Good Bacteria - this may be through fermented foods, probiotics, or other supplements like activated charcoal, and a number of other things.
Why You Should Work With a Registered Dietitian
When I first started practicing nutrition, I wasn't working with nutrigenomics testing like I am now. I worked in a hospital, first in oncology, then in a level 3 trauma unit. I started my practice in 2008 so that I could take a more holistic approach. At the time, nutrigenomics testing was still very expensive, so I didn't start doing more of it until it became more affordable about 5-7 years ago. Last year, I added the Bio Unique Boutique!
These days, there are a lot of nutritionists and health coaches out there who may not have proper certification or only go through a few weeks of classes. I went through years of school and had pre-med-type classes like anatomy, physiology, and organic chemistry. This means I have a fuller understanding of how the body works, and how different drugs interact with it. Just make sure you are choosing your healthcare professionals wisely!
